Smithfield Wholesale Market
Smithfield is one of the oldest markets in London being first used as a livestock market in the tenth century. Each year approximately 120,000 tonnes of produce pass through the market consisting of meat, poultry, cheese and other delicatessen products. Recently Smithfield has undergone a £70 million investment programme which has made it one of the most modern livestock markets in the world. We will see the Smithfield at work and hear about the current operating arrangements and the relationships between the City Corporation and the traders. Borough Market is London’s oldest food market. It has occupied the present site for 250 years. It has both wholesale and retail importance and is run as a charity with a board of trustees. Proposals are now being considered to regenerate the Market and combine community The Market is currently run as a partnership between the Queens Market branch of the National Market Traders Federation , the Queens Market Traders Association and St. Modwen Developments Ltd.
